When a piano feels uneven after a humid stretch, the problem may not be tuning at all. The action is made from wood, felt, leather, metal centres, springs, and tiny regulation points. As room humidity changes, those parts can swell, compress, or move just enough to make some keys feel slow while others still respond normally. A piano can be close to correct pitch and still feel tiring because touch and pitch are controlled by different parts of the instrument.

In Toronto homes, this often appears after a season changes. Dry furnace air can shrink wooden parts and change clearances. Summer humidity can add friction to felt bushings and action centres. A room near a vent, exterior wall, sunny window, basement corner, or portable humidifier may create a local climate around the piano that does not match the rest of the house. That is why the first appointment should include both the room and the action, not only the tuning pins.

What James checks first

James separates pitch, touch, and tone before recommending work. The first step is to confirm whether the piano is stable enough in pitch to make mechanical judgments useful. If the whole instrument is very low, a pitch raise or tuning plan may come before detailed regulation. If pitch is already stable, he can focus more directly on the action.

Why humidity changes the feel

The action is a precise mechanical system, but its materials are not inert. Felt can compress or swell. Wood can absorb and release moisture. Leather can change grip. Centre pins can feel tighter when surrounding cloth responds to damp air. These changes may be small, but the pianist feels them because the key mechanism depends on fine tolerances.

A common complaint is that the piano was recently tuned but still feels uneven. That is not unusual. Tuning adjusts string tension and pitch relationships. Regulation adjusts how the keys, wippens, jacks, hammers, dampers, and pedals move together. If the action is out of adjustment, a perfectly tuned chord can still feel hard to control.

Signs regulation may help

- Some keys feel heavier than neighbouring keys.

- Fast repetition feels unreliable.

- Soft playing is harder to control.

- Notes trigger too early or too late in the key stroke.

- The piano is in tune but still feels uneven under the hands.

- The pedals work, but the response feels noisy, late, or inconsistent.

These symptoms do not automatically mean the piano needs a major repair. Sometimes a few local adjustments solve the problem. Sometimes the action needs a broader regulation because felt has compressed, hammers have worn, or the geometry has drifted over years of use.

When regulation should wait

Regulation works best when the room is reasonably stable. If the piano is sitting through a temporary humidity extreme, James may recommend correcting the room first and reassessing after conditions settle. Regulating during a short abnormal swing can lead to adjustments that feel wrong once the room returns to normal.

The same caution applies when a piano has just moved, has unstable tuning pins, broken parts, severe hammer wear, or obvious moisture damage. In those cases, the practical order may be diagnosis, room stabilization, tuning or pitch correction, then regulation. The goal is not to sell every service at once. The goal is to put the work in the order that will hold.

Practical care plan

Track room humidity for several days with a digital hygrometer placed near the piano but away from vents, windows, humidifier outlets, and exterior walls. Keep the room as steady as possible, usually around a moderate humidity range rather than chasing one perfect number for a few hours. Tell the technician when the symptoms started, whether they change after rain or heating season, and whether the piano was moved recently.

Do not apply household lubricants, remove action parts, or try to bend action components yourself. Those shortcuts can create more friction, contaminate felt, or make later regulation harder. A careful service visit identifies whether the uneven touch comes from humidity, wear, adjustment drift, or a specific mechanical fault. Once the room pattern is understood, regulation can restore a smoother, more predictable connection between the keys and the sound.
