Toronto homes swing from dry furnace air to humid summers. Use this checklist to protect tuning stability, soundboards, keys, and piano tone.
Toronto is hard on acoustic pianos because indoor humidity can swing dramatically between winter and summer. In winter, furnace heat dries the soundboard and can pull the piano flat. In summer, moisture swells the wood and often pushes the pitch sharp. A stable room is the best protection: keep relative humidity near 40% to 50%, avoid placing the piano near vents or exterior doors, use a room humidifier or dehumidifier when needed, and monitor the room with a digital hygrometer. If the piano still drifts quickly after tuning, a technician can recommend a dedicated humidity-control system to protect tuning stability and long-term tone.
