A moved piano needs time to settle before tuning. Learn why Toronto humidity, floor changes, and string tension affect the best tuning window.
After a piano is moved, it is tempting to book a tuning immediately. In most homes, it is better to let the instrument settle first. A move changes the piano's environment, floor support, humidity exposure, and sometimes its internal tension. Once the piano is placed in its new room, the spruce soundboard and wooden action parts begin adjusting to the temperature and relative humidity around them. James usually recommends waiting one to two weeks before a standard tuning, unless the piano is being prepared for a performance or has fallen severely below pitch. Keeping the room near 40% to 50% relative humidity during that settling period gives the tuning a much better chance of lasting.
