How Often Should You Tune a Piano in Toronto?

Not sure when to call a piano tuner? Learn the recommended tuning schedule for Toronto's unique climate.

A frequently asked question is, 'How often should I tune my piano?' The general industry standard is at least twice a year. However, in Toronto, this is especially critical due to our extreme seasonal climate shifts. In the winter, dry furnace air shrinks the wooden soundboard, causing the pitch to drop flat. In the humid summer, the wood swells, pushing the pitch sharp. We strongly recommend tuning your piano once in the late spring (after the heating is turned off) and once in the late fall (after the furnace is turned on). If you are a professional musician, a teacher, or have a brand new piano whose strings are still stretching, you may need tuning up to four times a year.
