Grand piano planning starts before moving day
A grand piano move cannot be priced reliably from the piano brand alone. The instrument's approximate length, pickup and delivery access, number of steps, landing sizes, elevator dimensions, parking distance and final room position all affect the plan. A short video that follows the complete route from the piano to the truck is often more useful than a close-up photograph.
Before confirming a move, we review whether the instrument is a baby grand, medium grand or larger instrument and whether any unusually narrow doorways, sharp turns or exterior grades are involved. Difficult access may require additional crew, equipment or a separate site review. Availability and the final moving method are confirmed only after those details are understood.
How a grand differs from an upright
An upright normally travels in one protected piece. A grand piano requires a different sequence. The removable components are identified and protected, the body is prepared for a piano board, and the legs and pedal lyre are kept together for reassembly. The exact sequence depends on the instrument and the room around it; forcing a generic procedure into a tight space can create unnecessary risk.
The lid, music desk, finish and projecting hardware need particular attention because pressure in the wrong place can mark the cabinet. Removed hardware must also be organized so that reassembly at the destination is controlled rather than improvised.
Stairs, elevators and Toronto building access
Condo and commercial moves often depend on a booked freight elevator, loading-dock window, building contact and insurance-document deadline. In houses, the critical points are usually porch steps, basement turns, split-level landings and the change from hard flooring to carpet. Measurements should include door frames and railings, not only the open floor area.
For a stair move, send photographs from both the top and bottom of the flight and show every landing. For an elevator move, provide the door opening, interior width, depth and height. These details help identify whether the piano board and protected body can turn safely without relying on guesswork at the appointment.
Floor protection and final placement
Hardwood, tile, stone thresholds and recently renovated floors require a route plan before the piano is lifted. The destination room should be cleared, and the requested orientation of the keyboard should be decided in advance. Repeatedly repositioning a grand after assembly adds handling that can usually be avoided with one clear placement decision.
Room conditions matter after placement as well. Avoid putting the piano immediately beside a heating vent, fireplace, exterior door or strong direct sunlight when another practical location is available. For longer-term care, review our piano humidity and soundboard guide.
After the move: settling and tuning
A move does not automatically mean a piano needs emergency tuning the same day. Changes in temperature and humidity between the two rooms are often more important than the distance travelled. Let the instrument acclimate, then assess whether pitch, unisons or touch have changed. A practical starting point is our guide to tuning a piano after moving.
If the piano will wait between closing dates, include that in the original route plan. Pickup, temporary piano storage and return delivery should be coordinated as one job so access notes and protected components remain connected to the instrument.
What to send for an accurate quote
Send the piano make, model if known, approximate length, both addresses, preferred dates and clear photos or videos of the complete pickup and delivery routes. Note stairs, elevators, long carries, parking restrictions, construction and any deadline imposed by a building. If the move continues by freight, review our piano crating planning page. For a delicate finish or high-value instrument, review the documented white glove service scope.
