First decide whether the piano should be moved or removed
An unwanted piano is not automatically worthless, and an attractive cabinet is not automatically a playable instrument. Before paying to move it, identify the make, approximate age, size, current condition and service history. A piano that cannot hold pitch, has major water damage or needs work beyond its practical value may not justify another delivery.
Start with clear photographs of the full piano, keyboard, pedals, inside plate and visible damage. If the piano has sentimental value or appears structurally sound, a technician's inspection can be more useful than guessing from an online listing. Our used-piano defect guide explains warning signs to review before transport money is committed.
Why a free piano can become a removal problem
Many older uprights are offered free because the owner needs the room cleared. The receiving family may then discover that professional moving, pitch correction, tuning and repairs cost more than expected. Before accepting one, ask whether it has been tuned recently, whether every key and pedal works, and whether there is evidence of moisture, pests, loose tuning pins or structural damage.
A free price does not remove the eventual disposal obligation. If the instrument is unsuitable, someone still has to move a heavy object through the same stairs and doorways. Evaluating both condition and access before pickup protects the current owner and prospective recipient.
Access determines the removal method and price
Disposal still requires piano-moving planning. Send the piano type, floor level, complete stair route, landing sizes, door widths, elevator information and distance to legal truck parking. Basement turns, narrow porches, built-in railings and renovation debris can make removal more complex than the piano's resale value suggests.
Do not begin dismantling a piano simply to make it lighter. Strings, plate tension, sharp hardware and unstable cabinet parts can create hazards. The appropriate method depends on the instrument, access and destination, and it should be confirmed before work begins.
Upright, player and grand piano removal
Small uprights, tall studio uprights, old player pianos and grands have different weights and handling points. Player mechanisms can add substantial weight. A grand normally requires component removal and piano-board preparation even when it is not being delivered to another home. Disposal does not make the handling stage less important.
If the instrument may still have a buyer, school, family member or technician interested in it, arrange that decision before the removal appointment. Once a disposal route begins, recovering the piano or its components may not be practical.
Donation, resale and material recovery are not guaranteed
Donation organizations and buyers choose instruments according to condition, age, brand, access and their own capacity. A piano cannot be promised a donation destination simply because it was expensive decades ago. Material-recovery options also vary by instrument and receiving facility.
We can review the information you provide and explain whether further assessment appears worthwhile, but availability and the final destination must be confirmed. This is more honest than advertising a guaranteed recycling, donation or resale outcome that may not exist for a particular piano.
Estate, renovation and closing-date removals
When a property is being sold or renovated, tell us the possession date, contractor schedule and last day the route will remain clear. Elevator bookings, loading docks and condominium documents may have earlier deadlines than the closing itself. If the piano needs to wait while a family decides, temporary storage planning may be an alternative to immediate disposal.
What to send for a removal quote
Provide the piano make, model if known, approximate height or length, address, floor level, stairs, elevator details, parking distance and preferred date. Include a short route video and photographs of existing damage. We will review whether more information is needed and confirm the available removal scope before scheduling.
